A slower metabolism does not lead to obesity. That point is so important it’s worth mentioning one more time; a slower metabolism does NOT lead to obesity.

With the media constantly feeding us metabolism mumbo-jumbo, it makes it hard to separate fact from fiction. But the truth of the matter is that heavier set people actually have a higher metabolism, not the other way around.

In fact, larger individuals have more lean mass, which includes not just muscle, but all of the organs, including the heart and liver. And since the more lean mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate will be, it’s evident that those weighing more will thus have a higher metabolic rate.

If that isn’t enough, obese individuals have more weight to carry around. Therefore, they will be expending more energy and ultimately burning more calories.

So using the excuse of having a slower metabolism to explain one’s obesity is no longer valid.

What is the REAL reason for one’s obesity?

The real reason people are overweight has nothing to do with their metabolism not working fast enough, and everything to do with their workouts, diet, and lifestyle.

So, we now have to change our mentality from, “it’s not me, it’s my metabolism” to “it’s not my metabolism, it’s me”. If you can make that change in your thinking, then you are set to begin a powerful transformation of your body.

What about simply increasing my energy expenditure, such as taking pharmaceutical drugs to give me a 24 hour metabolism boost?

Well, when you take these types of supplements, you’ll feel exactly how you’d feel following a really hard workout weak, sweaty, hungry, and lethargic. Is that really how you want to feel all day? I didn’t think so!

Just be leery of marketers and their promises of faster metabolisms, or all day energy boosts. Their immediate goal is to get you to buy their products. So, arm yourself with knowledge and understand that what really makes the difference when it comes to fat loss is three things: workouts, diet, and lifestyle.

How to Live a Long Healthy Life (Part 5 of 5) – Living to 101 – BBC Horizon

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Horizon looks at how to stay healthy, active and live long (Living to 101). A scientific review on the logevity hotspots of the planet. Genes vs. attitude, what defines health and ultimately a long life (Part 5 of 5).

The delicate relationships of communities with their environment both in the past and the present play an integral role in the health and life expectancy of their populations.

Example of Okinawans now living in Hawaii, who are at higher risk of developing age related diseases, due to having adopted lifestyles unsuited to their evolved genetic traits. This trend is even filtering back into the heart of Okinawan society, endangering its status of longevity and the younger population itself.

Long-lived societies wordwide reveal a fine balance between cultural habits, lifestyle and carefully evolved genetic trends that are meant to help them cope with their environment. Current global cultural homogenisation is putting this fine balance at risk.
