What are some major events that affected Great Britain between 1840 and 1928?

I am doing a research project on Thomas Hardy, a British poet. I need information on important events and the lifestyle they lived during this time in order to help understand his influences and inspirations.

The biggest one i’m aware of is only World War 1. Four years of major war from 1914 to 1918.

Perhaps research 19th century England to get some more background.
