What are the basics for a running lifestyle?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

I’m fifteen and want to get into running. I need to know some of the basics, though I’m not going out for track or anything… :P

For example, what type of shoe should I get? From what I hear Puma is a very good brand of running shoe.

Also, how much time should I commit to training? And do you know what time of day it’s best to train?

I understand that electrolytes, water, and a healthy diet are a must…
And that’s about it. xD

I run in Nikes, but I think the brand of shoe you use depends on the person. I would stay with Nike, New Balance, Asics but that is just me. The best times to run are usually in the early morning or evening. You want to try and avoid the hottest part of the day. Water works fine as long as you drink enough. The body can only absorb one liter of water an hour. Electrolytes, such as Poweraid are good, but are high in sugar.

A slower metabolism does not lead to obesity. That point is so important it’s worth mentioning one more time; a slower metabolism does NOT lead to obesity.

With the media constantly feeding us metabolism mumbo-jumbo, it makes it hard to separate fact from fiction. But the truth of the matter is that heavier set people actually have a higher metabolism, not the other way around.

In fact, larger individuals have more lean mass, which includes not just muscle, but all of the organs, including the heart and liver. And since the more lean mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate will be, it’s evident that those weighing more will thus have a higher metabolic rate.

If that isn’t enough, obese individuals have more weight to carry around. Therefore, they will be expending more energy and ultimately burning more calories.

So using the excuse of having a slower metabolism to explain one’s obesity is no longer valid.

What is the REAL reason for one’s obesity?

The real reason people are overweight has nothing to do with their metabolism not working fast enough, and everything to do with their workouts, diet, and lifestyle.

So, we now have to change our mentality from, “it’s not me, it’s my metabolism” to “it’s not my metabolism, it’s me”. If you can make that change in your thinking, then you are set to begin a powerful transformation of your body.

What about simply increasing my energy expenditure, such as taking pharmaceutical drugs to give me a 24 hour metabolism boost?

Well, when you take these types of supplements, you’ll feel exactly how you’d feel following a really hard workout weak, sweaty, hungry, and lethargic. Is that really how you want to feel all day? I didn’t think so!

Just be leery of marketers and their promises of faster metabolisms, or all day energy boosts. Their immediate goal is to get you to buy their products. So, arm yourself with knowledge and understand that what really makes the difference when it comes to fat loss is three things: workouts, diet, and lifestyle.

Curious about how long it takes to get housing and lifestyle established on military base?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Husband is thinking of joining air force as a nurse, BSN. I am also a nurse and won’t quit my job until we find out what base we will be relocated to. Just curious how long the process takes after he completes the 4 week commissioned officer’s training. I would like any helpful tips if you have any? Thanks!

It really depends on how many bedrooms you need and the length of the waiting list on the base your husband gets stationed at. As for you, you shouldn’t have any problem getting a job near the base. RNs are needed more than anyone else at hospitals.

To avoid headaches and stress… you may want to wait to move with him to his duty station until he gets the keys for your house. Sometimes the wait list can be quite long and in that case you both may opt to live off base. Let him go first and take care of getting in-processed and then move after things are settled.

What kind of training will I have to go through to switch branches?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Im going into the navy for 4 years,My goal is to be in the marines but i’ve seen what happends to alot of 18 year old who sign their life to the marines at a young age. Sadly alot of them cannot handle it and I dont want to be one of them. I decided to join the navy to get the military lifestyle and get used to it before switching to the marines. After my 4 years I’de like to switch what will I have to do?

you would just enlist to the marines.. and they would tell you how it works.. i think you should just start with the marines.. instead of loosing 8 years of your life instead of 4.. and by loose.. i dont mean waste.. i mean be obligated to serve.. sorry if that wasnt said well
